Orange Shirt Pin – Crafternoon Series

Join Métis Knowledge Keeper / Elder Joy Bremner for a Métis cultural workshop at Nanaimo Museum! On Saturday, September 12 from 12:30-3:30pm, Joy will lead participants in creating their own beaded Orange Shirt pin.

Joy will present an introduction to the creation of Orange Shirt Day and then teach participants basic single-needle techniques needed for this project. Two patterns will be available, depending on participant skill level. Participants can expect to complete or mostly complete their pin by the end of the workshop, and will leave with the skills and materials to finish their project at home.

Orange Shirt Day, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is observed annually on September 30th in Canada. Orange shirts are worn throughout the year during events to honour all Indigenous children.

All materials will be provided. No experience necessary.

Ages: 15+

Tickets: $50 per person, and pre-registration is required. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable to other dates or programs. A minimum of 10 guests is required for this program to proceed.

Joy Bremner, Métis Knowledge Keeper / Elder

Joy was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, both of her parents Métis. The Métis Culture has been with her throughout her life, as well as many First Nations friends while living across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Yukon and then settling on Vancouver Island.

Mentored by numerous Métis Old Ones (Elders) within many communities, Joy has shared her Métis cultural knowledge at Gatherings, workshops, and educational institutes with Métis youth and the general public. Joy practices a wide range of activities, including beading, porcupine quill work, moose hair tufting, leather-work, traditional foods, medicines, weaving, and the list goes on.

Although online payment is made through PayPal, a PayPal account is not required, only a credit card or debit card. Please note that there will be no physical ticket issued. Your spot in this program is confirmed once you have the PayPal transaction confirmation. Registration can also be made over the phone or in person.
