Chado: The Way of Tea – Crafternoon Series

Date/Time
Date(s) - 26/05/2018
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Chado, or Tea Ceremony, is a traditional practice in Japanese culture. It originated as a Zen practice in the 16th century, and continues to this day. Chado includes drinking matcha green tea, made from the ground leaves of the camellia sinensis tea plant. When whisked into hot water, it becomes a frothy, creamy drink.

In this Crafternoon session, Asuka Naomi, a Japanese Canadian in Nanaimo, will teach participants about the Chado ceremony. She will demonstrate a Japanese tea ceremony in the Ryu-rei style (at a table and seated on chairs) and share her knowledge of matcha green tea and Chado manners. Naomi and her assistants will serve guests bowls of matcha and Japanese sweets, and guests can put their etiquette into practice, enjoying the peaceful ceremony in small groups.

Asuka Naomi

Born and raised in Japan, Naomi experienced her first Chado at 7 years old. Since then, she has participated in and enjoyed many tea ceremonies. In 2011, she moved to Nanaimo from Japan. She noticed there was no place to enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony with kimono in Nanaimo.

In 2016, she opened a Japanese tea-room in Nanaimo and now shares her tea ceremony experiences and knowledge, to enjoy Japanese culture with many people.

Naomi’s tea-room holds tea sessions every month, and she also organizes tea ceremony outreach sessions.
