Explore the recreated mine to learn about coal resources in Nanaimo, technology and working conditions. A visit to the Bastion historical building is a step back in time to the earliest days of coal mining in Nanaimo. Discrimination faced by Chinese and Italian miners is touched on. 

Due to construction, students will not visit the miners’ cottage historical building in 2021-2022, but will instead enjoy a visit to the historic Bastion. The Bastion is not wheelchair accessible, with 3 sets of steep stairs.

This is an in-person, in-museum program.
