Black Histories in Nanaimo

From trailblazing baseball player, Jimmy Claxton, to the first Black school teacher on Vancouver Island, Emma Stark, these stories highlight their contributions to Nanaimo and connect to Black communities in other areas of BC. The stories are embedded in exhibits throughout the main gallery, reflecting the deep roots of the Black community.

Thank you to Barbara Hudlin and the BC Black History Awareness Society in Victoria for their support!
