The Welcome Area

What makes Nanaimo unique?  The Welcome Area showcases local “firsts” and highlights.

The Adopt an Artifact display in this area showcases the important role community members have played in preserving Nanaimo’s heritage. Adopting an artifact helps ensure our past has a future and shows that you are a supporter of local heritage. Be sure to check out the Adopt an Artifact monitor for adoption opportunities and to view restored or adopted pieces.

The petroglyph is called the Hepburn Stone.  It was discovered near the Nanaimo River in the 1920s while professional engineer James Hepburn was digging a well. The ferocious face carved into the granite stone has inspired a variety of interpretations since its discovery.
