The Sweet Story of the Nanaimo Bar

Activity: class discussions; Class Recipe Book activity, supported by Educator’s Guide and templates. 

Program Coordinator Steph spills the tea on the history of the Nanaimo Bar as she makes a pan of the iconic treat! Part cooking show, part history lesson, the Nanaimo Bar story is as layered as the dessert itself. Hear about its murky origins, the competition to find the ultimate Nanaimo Bar recipe, its rise to fame, and the controversies that have made headlines in the past few years.  

The end of this video prompts a class discussion on the significance of family recipes.  

The class activity is a recipe round up, where each student collects one special recipe from their family, heritage, or media that they love, and compile them into a class cookbook. A recipe for Nanaimo Bars is include in the activity materials, with the option for classes to make their own together, with or without nuts.
