Permanent Exhibit

From “Herring Capital” to Seven Potatoes

Japanese Canadian community in Nanaimo.

The exhibit is a collaboration of the Central Vancouver Island Japanese Canadian Society (known as the Seven Potatoes) and the Nanaimo Museum, created to explore the story of the Japanese Canadian community in Nanaimo in three chapters:

1) A thriving community before 1942 with over 30 residences, herring salteries and other businesses

2) The forcible uprooting, dispossession and exile of Japanese Canadians from 1942-1949

3) Community rebirth and redress from the 1950s to the present, including the work of the Seven Potatoes
