Journey back through time and experience Christmas a hundred years ago. Treat your home learner to a fast-paced, pre-recorded virtual tour of the Miner’s Cottage, before and after it’s decorated for the season! Students will learn how miners’ families lived in Nanaimo, and marvel at a candle-lit Christmas tree, homemade ornaments, and wooden toys waiting for Christmas morning. Inquiry questions and an educator background resource provides the history of the cottage and optional extension activities.  The video will be available to registered households from December 1-18, and can be viewed as many times as desired.  Virtual Yesteryear Christmas meets provincial Social Studies curriculum for grades K-3.

We recommend that an adult remain with their learner through the Yesteryear Christmas video, which streams through YouTube.com.

Christmas Ornament Craft (included)

Students can also make their own holiday ornament as a seasonal craft kit is included in the booking fee.  After booking their household, home educators will be notified when their craft kit is available for pick up at the museum, Tuesday – Saturday from 10-3:30.

Instructions and pre-cut materials for the Christmas Ornament Craft are included, but households will need to supply glue and felt-tip pens. We recommend Aleene’s Tacky Glue (available at Michael’s) and Sharpies, but any liquid glue and felt-tip markers should work. Adult guidance is recommended.

Fireside Chat (included)

  • Optional attendance
  • 20 minutes long
  • Via Zoom videoconferencing app

An opportunity for learners to chat with a live museum educator, and learn about different Christmas and winter traditions around the world.  Households will receive an emailed Zoom link shortly before the Chat date. We recommend that an adult remain with their learner during the Fireside Chat. This session does not require the use of a webcam, but does use the Zoom video conferencing platform. The program may include polls, physical movement, and answering inquiry questions through the chat function.

Registration will allow access to the Yesteryear Christmas video from Dec. 1-18, as well as reserve a spot for your learner in the Fireside Chat on the date above.
