Ages: 10-15

Cost: $8 per learner

Join other local home learners for this special session of the stem ‘aĺu ‘u’ ni x̌e’x̌e What is Sacred? / North West Coast Art program.

This program is based on our current feature exhibit, stem ‘aĺu ‘u’ ni x̌e’x̌e What is Sacred?, curated by Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun (Snuneymuxw). The exhibit includes historical and contemporary examples of Coast Salish art with a focus on Snuneymuxw and cultures on the mid-island, and is a celebration of the richness and vitality of Coast Salish art.

First, learners will explore the past, present, and future of Coast Salish art through an interactive guided tour of the exhibit, engaging activities, and discussions about this distinct North West Coast art style. Art forms including stone sculpture, cedar weaving, wool weaving, and carving are featured. Next, learners will handle and study cedar carvings made by artists from the Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw and Nuu Chah Nulth regions.

This is a 90-minute, in-person program that takes place at Nanaimo Museum.
