Volunteering at the Nanaimo Museum

Volunteers are a very important key to the success of the museum – they support staff and provide programming.

Quite simply the museum could not operate without the help of the wonderful volunteers of Nanaimo. Volunteering is fun and rewarding at the museum. Volunteers receive several benefits including a free one-year museum membership, 15% gift shop discount, seasonal newsletter, regular exhibit and event information, and voting rights at the Annual General Meeting.

Volunteer Opportunities

Yesteryear Christmas Program Guide

Nanaimo Museum is currently recruiting volunteer docents (program guides) for the upcoming December 2018 Elementary School Program season. Volunteers will lead a portion of the 90 minute Christmas school program, including taking children to the Miner’s Cottage, distributing a snack, leading storytime, and helping with a hands-on craft. Yesteryear Christmas is a school program targeted to children grades K-2, and teaches children about the holiday traditions celebrated by Nanaimoites about 100 years ago. Interested applicants should enjoy working with children and public speaking.

This program runs twice a day, Monday to Friday, from December 4 through December 20, between the hours of 9:00am–12pm and 12pm—2:30pm (there will be a break in between each program).  All program volunteers will receive full training on the program content and museum requirements. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of two (2) programs per week during this period – these can be on the same day.

All volunteers must complete a Vulnerable Sector /Criminal Record check before being permitted to participate in children’s programming.

Interested new and returning volunteers should contact Steph Kveton by November 1st: program@nanaimomuseum.ca or 250-753-1821. New volunteers can download the volunteer application form to the left or pick one up from our front desk.

Gallery Host

The entry level volunteer position is Gallery Host.

This position allows new volunteers to become oriented with the museum exhibits and programs.  The trial period for volunteers is two months, at which time the volunteer and museum staff have an opportunity to discuss how the volunteer placement is going and whether it is a good fit for both parties.  At the end of the trial period, volunteers may have the option to spend time in other areas of the museum including programs and the front desk, if positions are available.
