Closed Until Further Notice
In light of the developing situation with Covid-19 the Nanaimo Museum will be closed until further notice, effective immediately. This includes all programs and facility use. The health and safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers is of the utmost importance to us and as such we are aligning ourselves the City of Nanaimo to support the local, provincial and national efforts to halt the spread of the virus.
We will continue to work with the City, to take guidance from health officials and will share any updates via our social media channels, our google business listing, and here on our website.
We hope that you will follow along with us on social media @nanaimomuseum as we share content that can be enjoyed at home by all ages.
The Nanaimo Museum Team
April 3, 2020 Update & Message from our General Manager
Dear Museum Friends,
This extraordinary time is fascinating for us here at the museum because it is a stark reminder that we’re always watching the history of tomorrow, unfolding today. The museum has been closed since mid-March but our team is still working away behind the scenes. We’ve been in discussion about what role the museum can play for the community while we are closed. We can certainly record what we are experiencing now for future generations, something I encourage all of you to explore as well. What messaging is impacting you, how are you feeling, what are you seeing that you could snap a picture of to share with future generations of your family and community?
We are paying close attention to the health officials to make sure we are doing our part to flatten the curve and support both our vulnerable citizens and our front line workers whose efforts are beyond heroic. We are looking after ourselves and we are reaching out to our members, volunteers and our partners to offer support and to continue collaboration. Of course, we are also caring for our collection and facility to make sure it stays in top shape for the wonderful day we can invite you back in.
You may have noticed that we have been continuing to offer programming and history on our social media channels. We have many ideas but we would like to hear from you. I am inviting you to take a few minutes to fill out a short survey through which we can hear your ideas on what you would like us to offer the community remotely. We will then incorporate your feedback into our planning. I’d like to thank you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts with us and remember that, while our doors may be shut, our hearts and inboxes are not, and we are always happy to connect with you as we all navigate this unprecedented time together. Please take care of yourselves and our community. We look forward to welcoming you to the museum again as soon as possible.
Yours in friendship,
Sophia Maher, General Manager
